Summer Vacation in Salzburg

A unique combination of culture, music, beautiful lakes and the city of Salzburg.
The holiday region of Salzburg, is of course best known for the city, Mozart and the Sound of Music. All three of course phenomena, but the area has obviously much more to offer, making your holiday a unique moment.

Thus the Salzburg region is also one of the most appealing sports regions in Austria, with fantastic lakes as Lake Fuschl and Lake Wolfgang, and it has some special skiing destinations within its borders, including Saalbach Hinterglemm and Zell am See – Kaprun.

However, the main attraction is the city of Salzburg, and here are therefore most tourists. The city is the cultural and musical capital of Europe, and is full of attractions, sights and major events. There is, perhaps leaving Vienna disregarded, no other city in Austria, which has so much culture and history to offer.

The Salzburg region is also the perfect destination if you want to combine history, culture, watersports and other active outdoor sports during a holiday. Staying in the city is of course more expensive than in other places within the region, but the travel distances are not too large if you are staying outside the city, while you can enjoy more of the lakes and mountains.

Being active Outside

Rest, beautiful mountains and many sporting moments.
The region around the city of Salzburg is ideally suited for various mountain sports and other outdoor sports. An extensive network of hiking trails through the valleys, and uphill, are available. Whether you want to walk quietly through the valley, along one of the many lakes, or challenging up a mountain, there is always a beautiful and suitable route available.

Also, for Biking and cycling there are numerous routes available, and again easy and challenging routes. All routes, including hiking trails, have a good signage.

Naturally there are other mountain sports offered, including paragliding, canyoning, Nordic walking.

Lakes and other water sports

Great opportunities for water sports.
The possibilities for water sports are particularly large around the city of Salzburg, but also in the city itself. Several pools, and several large and small lakes offer everything you could wish for.

Especially the larger lakes, such as Lake Fuschl and Lake Wolfgang, are very suitable for sailing, while everywhere also sailboats and motorboats can be rented. It is a very nice combination of watersports, with small nice villages such as St. Wolfgang.

Moreover, like on lake Wolfgang, you can view the villages around the lake also during a cruise.

Besides the lakes and pools you can actively enjoy water sports in various places, such as during rafting or canyoning, and in some places you can dive or fish.

The best tips and Attractions

Music and culture in one destination.
During a holiday in Salzburg, and the villages around the city, you will certainly not have time to get bored. Especially the city has much to offer, for both adults and children.

Most important sight is the old center of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage, surmounted by the magnificent fortress Hohensalzburg. The fortress offers impressive views over the city and the surrounding country, and is called the best preserved fortress in Europe.

But, if you spend the holidays here, you should also certainly visit the birthplace of Mozart and the Dom, which stands right in the historical center. The square with the Dom is often the place where many artists and musicians are to be found and you will enjoy their work.

Other attractions which you really must see are the various museums, mostly about the wealth that came from the salt, and of course Mozart, but also the St. Peter’s Church, the Pferdeschwemme, one of the many fountains in the city where once the horses had their bath, and the monastery Nonnberg are definitely worth a visit.

And then there are many other attractions in and around Salzburg, which we have not mentioned. All the more reason, to visit this beautiful city and the surrounding country during a holiday.
